Having the right people, with the right skills in your business can offer so many benefits, but how do you get it right?
Most automotive employers fully appreciate that the success of their garage is driven by its staff. But, finding the right employees with the necessary abilities and attitudes – and then keeping them – requires time and energy, both of which can be in short supply when you are an independent garage owner.
The next generation of school leavers, entering employment for the first time will shape the world of work for years to come. Attracting the best of these workers is critical. Their career aspirations, attitudes about work and knowledge of new technologies will define the culture of the 21st century workplace.
They are also crucial to filling a sector-wide skills gap, which continues to have a negative impact on automotive businesses throughout the UK and has led many employers to turn to a trusted source of talent and training in Apprenticeships. This model of learning and earning helps an employer look passed the obvious lack of experience when employing a young person for the first time.
This has been acknowledged in the new Trailblazer standard for the Light Vehicle Technician Level 3, which has been created by industry employers and focuses as much on behaviours and attitude as it does technical skills.
Indeed, in his own LinkedIn account some years ago Richard Branson wrote, “The first thing to look for when searching for a great employee is somebody with a personality that fits with your company culture. Most skills can be learned, but it is difficult to train people on their personality. If you can find people who are fun, friendly, caring and love helping others, you are on to a winner.”
Of course, a good attitude doesn’t diagnose complex engine faults on its own. But that can be taught.
As a Training Provider that works with the motor industry to champion skills development Remit Training has adopted a robust method of apprentice recruitment, which will help employers pick the crop of talent. This week we met a number of young people, fresh from school who are desperate for that first job opportunity in the trade.
By hosting a full motor industry induction day in Nottingham,this group of work-ready candidates kick-started the first stage of this in depth recruitment process. As well as completing a number of interview style questions, which helped to create a profile for each individual, they also sat their initial assessments along with their Mechanical Competency test.
These results help us showcase their drive and talent to employers as well as streamlining the next steps of their recruitment with employers in the area, who either already have vacancies or who are thinking about taking on an apprentice.
Either way, we make sure the calibre of candidates is high, they understand the industry and roles available and have the right attitude. As a Quinten Tarantino character once commented, ‘personality goes a long way’.
